Abstract

|
Contact dermatitis (CD) is one of the most prevalent inflammatory skin diseases worldwide with a significant impairment in quality of life. Direct exposure to environmental chemicals, especially both at home and in the workplace, has resulted in various types of CD. It can be divided into four categories based on etiology: irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), photocontact dermatitis, contact urticaria. Among these, ICD is the most common type of CD (about 80%) and ACD is the second (about 20%). The purpose of this review is to provide up-to-date information on the pathogenesis of CD, especially ICD and ACD. Recent studies have begun to focus on the role of both innate and acquired immunity in CD.
